March 2017

25th

NCECA,  The National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts is here in Portland!  6-8,000 visitors from around the US and the world will be visting the conference and the city to see and talk about contemporary ceramics.

I'll have brightly colored soda fired work represented by the Gandee Gallery of Syracuse, New York at the Convention Center Expo, with an opening on Tuesday, March 21st  6:30 - 8 pm.

You can see more about the 8 galleries that are at the Expo in the Convention center at this link.

Another exciting exhbition I'm in is at the  CHEHALEM CULTURAL CENTER,

( www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/exhibitions/ ) in Newburg, about thirty minutes from Portland.  This is a wood firing exhibition, with two show, one of Oregon wood fire artists and kilns , called Ashes and Flux, and another titled " Great Waves Across the Pacific",  that has work from some of the best national wood fire artists including John Neely of Utah, and Chris Gustin from Massachusetts.

The opening is Thursday night, March 24th from 5-8 pm.

Friday night is the opening of three more exhibiitons where my work is represented.

The Oregon Potters Association has three exhbits at Skutt Ceramics,   I have work at the “Keep Portland Wared” show.

"Mudshark, 10 Years in the Making" exhibition has work from many of Mudshark's  employees, past and present at the Bison Building,  (920 NE Glisan Street Portland, OR 97232),

and the Henjyoji Buddhist Temple has transformed its upstairs into a light filled space for hosting an exhibion called "Onko Chisin"  (at 2634 SE 12th Ave,, Portland, OR 97202.) This exhbit showcases a variety of ways that ceramics is used today by artists from traditional pottery, (I have a series of contianers)  to installation to "social practice".  Sanjit Sethi, dean of the Corccoran School of Art at George Washington University will be conducting a seres of conversations with Artsit and Hospice workers as part of this exhibit, and documenting the conversation of how ceramics can be signficant with people and families encountering the end of life.

There is so much to see, professional and student exhibitions, any and everything ceramic,  see the website for over 100 shows in town!   http://nceca.net/2017-portland-future-flux/

chris_baskin_main_image

Chris Baskin is a nationally recognized clay artist who makes ceramics for utilitarian, aesthetic, and contemplative purposes. Inspired by ceramic works and transformative processes since childhood, he creates objects embodying the mystery of ideas and values existing and manifesting in the material world. Chris completed a Master of Divinity degree in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Master of Fine Arts degree at Alfred University School of Art and Design in New York. He has served as a resort chaplain, mountain guide, and professor at Northern Arizona University and University of Louisville. He currently works and pursues his studio practice at Mudshark Studios in Portland, Oregon.

This three-day workshop focuses on forming and glazing for soda firing. Demonstrations and lectures will address accessing and developing visual images connected to personal ideas and interests. The first day will provide an overview of the soda firing glazing process and loading of the kiln. Students should bring bisqueware for glazing, as well as sketchbooks or other image sources. On the second day, we will fire the soda kiln while Chris demonstrates his forming techniques. Day three will include additional demonstrations in the morning, unloading the kiln and discussion of the work in the afternoon.
